Roo Bake's Cream Tart for Ambar's Birthday

"Non, aku pesen hurufnya "A", "B", sama "L", ya. Ukurannya rada sedang gitu bisa, kan," tanya gue kepada Nona yang baru aja memulai bisnis online-nya. "Bisa, Kak. Aman," balasnya singkat. Dengan ini, semuanya aman. Kado udah, rencana kejutan udah, kue pun udah, pikir gue dalam hati. Lantas gue mengakhiri percakapan dengan Nona di Whatsapp dan melanjutkan penerbangan gue ke Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, dengan hati yang tenang.

Ambar's Birthday Cream Tart from Roo Bake

We all know the amount of sugar they put inside the cake is A-WHOLE-FREAKING-LOT.

"Git, kuenya Nona aja," ucap gue. Balasan Anggita sederhana aja, "Hah, Nona?".

"Iya, gue baru inget Nona jualan kue, dia bikin sendiri kuenya. Cantik, kayak mille-fuille tapi bukan dari puff pastry. Mau, nggak," tanya gue untuk memastikan.

"Ih, boleh, tuh! Ya udah deh, Ket, kuenya dari Nona aja," balas Anggita. Selesai percakapan gue dengan Anggita, terjadilah percakapan gue dengan Nona seperti di awal cerita tadi.

Fluffy whipped cream at its' best

Mau bentuk huruf? Bisa. Mau bentuk angka? Bisa banget. Mau bentuk yang lain? Bisa juga! You name it.

Aint it a beauty?

Other than that, the cake was fine.

From left to right: Anggita, Ambar, and Kinan (Me)

Everybody was, and still is, happy.

Hello, 22.

I don't plan to write out an emotional post, especially when its' a Food & Travel blog. But, I do have to say that I am thankful that I turned 22.

It was not the best and most memorable birthday I have ever gone through. I personally think that birthdays should be festive, fun, surprising, and special. And, yet, I didn't have any of that during this year's birthday. It got to the point where it hit rockbottom and I couldn't help but to fake smile and wish that the day would end soon, hence the reason why I slept for almost twelve hours straight during the day even though that it was school day.

But, despite all that, I am thankful..

I am thankful for the fact that I didn't have to go through the transition of November 22nd to November 23rd alone, followed by your video call and the adorable, "I'm sorry I don't have any cake or birthday present," whilst lighting a fire from a lighter and told me to make a wish. Nothing beats the simplicity of a loved one remembering your birthday.

I am thankful for the effort of a close friend to send me a birthday greeting with a picture of me sleeping and her hand holding out a note with "HBD UNA" written on it. Despite her tight schedule, she managed to slip in a minute to wish me a happy birthday and a prosperous years ahead.

I am thankful the birthday salutation from my juniors and the last minute birthday cake and surprises. I was overwhelmed I stopped my Crystal Maiden from hitting all the creeps that can get me coins to buy me Black King Bar. I ended up losing the match, but nothing beats Jamrud's Selamat Ulang Tahun being sang to you on your birthday. Oh, and did I mention cake? A very creative cake, I have to say!

Thank, you. :)

Most Adorable Birthday Present Ever!

On my last birthday, my two best friends got me the most adorable birthday present ever! They got me this popcorn machine like the ones that you can find at circus, except this one is the mini version. Just look at it! Isn't it adorable?

It is red in color, with a hint of dark gold on the sides. The machine is very compact and light, nonetheless portable and very handy, very suitable for slumber parties. And it is easy to operate as well - all you have to do is plug it in, turn it on, pour some popcorn into it, and let magic do the rest of the work. In less than five minutes, you will have your batch of popcorn ready to indulge.

Unfortunately, the machine can get a little bit out of control when it pops out the fresh popcorns. Most of the popcorns flew everywhere, leaving mess on the floor and inside the machine as well. There was a bit of corn flakes here and there, as well as leftover white puffs and crumbs. As a lazy bum, it's a bit of a challenge to clean the machine afterwards.

I know my last birthday was on November last year and, boy, has it been a such long months. This is a very late post, but better late than never, right?

Birthday Surprises

Dear readers,

I am proud to announce that I am now 18 years of age!

November 23rd was the day I turned 18. I woke up to a sight of my Mom making Tumpeng in the kitchen. Tumpeng is a cone-shaped rice, with various dishes surrounding the mountain of rice, which is usually consumed by Indonesian during a special event. In this case, my birthday. Indonesian believe that the cone-shaped rice represent the mountains in the land of Java, which is the house of the Gods, and the side dishes surrounding the rice are the things given by the Gods that we harvested. The peak of the Tumpeng is usually cut and gave to the most important person. He, or she, could be the one you love most, the eldest, or simply the birthday girl.

Mom didn't expect me to wake up early (it was half passed ten in the morning. I usually wake up after midday), so she was a bit startled when I asked her about what we were going to have for lunch, on my way to the bathroom. I believe Mom was hoping to finish the Tumpeng before I woke up. But, since I was aready awake, I ended up helping her preparing the dish.

Yellow rice is usually used in the making of Tumpeng. But, since we didn't have any yellow rice, we used red rice instead. This dish is very simple to make, as it consists of cone-shaped rice and various side dishes. Mom started with peeling the tomato and make a rose out of it.

Rose Tomato, Step #1:
- Posses a kick-ass skill in using knife

Step #2:
- Peel the tomato in a swirly pattern. If you haven't an idea, you may open YouTube and type "How to Make Tomato Rose".

Slowly peel the tomato

Voila!

Step #3:
- Twirl the Tomato skin round and round, and voila! you just made yourself a Tomato Rose.

Twirl the Tomato..

..and there you have it, a Tomato Rose!

Step #4:
- If you don't have any idea on what to do with the skinless Tomato, you can cut them to pieces and start munching.

Tomato for breakfast

Other than Rose Tomato, my Mom also made a flower with a green tomato. Green tomato are usually used to make chilly paste (sambal), I don't think they taste as sweet as red tomatoes.

Green Tomato Flower, Step #1:
- Master a more kick-ass skill in using knife.

Step #2:
- Make an X on the skin of the Green Tomato.

Make an X on the green tomato

Step #3:
- Slowly peel the skin. Make sure the inner part of the Green Tomato is detached from the skin.

Peel the skin a bit

Step #4:
- Pull the skin apart from the inner part a little bit, and there you have it!

A plate of foodstuff for garnishing

One of the side dishes that Mom made to decorate the Tumpeng with was Tempe Orek. Tempe is a chunk of fermented soybean, and in Tempe Orek, it is cut into small pieces and fried with some nuts. Soy sauce and chilly are used in the process of making this dish. Fry the Tempe and the nuts together and you will end up with a bowl of crispy and flavorful dish.

Tempe Orek

The next dish was Sambal Goreng Kentang. You only need potato, spices, and frying pan to make this dish. First, you diced the potato. Second, fry the potato with the spices. Last, but not least, dig in!

I love Mom's Sambal Goreng Kentang because it tasted delicious! True, it's a bit spicy for my taste, but I like it. Especially when Mom add some meatballs to the dish, yum!

Sambel Goreng Kentang

Vegetables were also used to decorate the Tumpeng. Mom used four kinds of vegetable, which were bean sprouts, long beans, water spinach, and spinach. They were quickly boiled and mixed with a rubbing named Urab. Urab here is made out of coconut and spices. It tasted savory and a bit salty.

Put some urab on the mixed veggies..

..and mix them all together

Then, Mom took out some flour and corn, and made a batter to make a corn fritter. Indonesian are more familiar with the name Bakwan Jagung, which is Corn Fritter in English. It's basically deep-fried batter with corns in it. You have got to try my Mom's Corn Fritter. They are beyond delicious you ought to want more after you finish a piece.

Corn Fritter (Bakwan Jagung)

Sliced omelette is another side dish that you can found in a Tumpeng. We didn't use many eggs to make the omelette, one is enough. You simply crack an egg open and add some salt into the gigantic cell, and stir it until it's bubbly. Then, you fry the egg mixture with a non-stick frying pan, with low fire. After the egg is nicely fried, roll it and slice it. The next thing you know, the Tumpeng is garnished with eatable confetti.

After the side dishes were prepared, Mom proceed in shaping the red rice. Since we don't have a cone shaper, Mom cunningly used whatever tools that we got to shape the rice. She used a bowl to make the base and a funnel to make the peak. In the end, the Tumpeng didn't share the same shape with a cone, but you would get the idea.

After the rice was shaped and the side dishes were prepared, it was time to decorate the Tumpeng!

Chiko was curious to see what Mom was doing

Of course, fried chicken is essential in Tumpeng!

It was midday when Mom finished her creation. What used to be an empty white plate had become a luxurious dish that can feed three people. There was this mountain of red rice, surrounded by colorful side dishes. There were Tomato Roses and Tomato Flower, there were also fried chicken, spicy potato, and greens. The Tumpeng that Mom made was awesome!

Then, we proceed to destroy the beautiful masterpiece and dig in. I had a spoonful of rice with a little bit of everything. I love every single thing that was on my plate, especially the Bakwan Jagung and the Sambal Goreng Kentang.

And there you have it, a plate of luxurious Tumpeng

Lunch is served!

My Dad couldn't go home on my birthday because he had a simulator test, so he wished me a birthday greeting via Whatsapp and gave me a virtual birthday present on his Tumblr. Thank you, Dad!

After lunch, I got a text message from my colleague at work, saying that I have to drop by at Gudang Rottie, so I did. I arrived at the restaurant and I was overwhelmed. I was welcomed with a plate of red Velvet Cupcake, with a pair of lit-up candles on top. They shook my hand and gave me birthday greetings, and we took picture together. The place was a full-house that afternoon, so we quickly celebrate my birthday and got back to work.

I stayed for a while at Gudang Rottie and headed back home. I brought the Red Velvet Cupcake that my colleague gave to me and share it with my Mom. It was nice and sweet, and a little bit salty on the edges of the cake too. The cupcake was delicious!

Birthday surprise from my colleague in Gudang Rottie

At night, I was surprised by my best friends, Icha, Dila, Sally and Angel. The came to my house with cakes and presents. The fantastic four sang "Happy Birthday" as they walked into the house, while I was giggling to F.R.I.E.N.D.S. that was aired on Fox Channel. I was overjoyed, I squealed the entire time. It was the most awesome birthday surprise I had!

Quick intro!

There were two cakes, one was from Icha and Dila, and the other one was from Angel and Sally. Angel and Sally's cake was decorated with lit-up 1 and 8 candles, and the cake had "Happy Birthday Kinan" written on it. The cake was glazed with white cream and decorated with green icing sugar and chocolate block.

Icha and Dila's cake was bathe in chocolate ganache, and decorated with strawberries and chocolates. "NABUNAGA TWINS" was written on the cake, which I supposed would be "NOBUNAGA TWINS" if the one who wrote on the cake didn't accidently switched the vowel. Dila, Icha, and I are fans of Takehiko Inoue's Slam Dunk. The two of them made Slam Dunk fan-fictions, in which I was the twin sister of a character named Kiyota Nobunaga, hence explained the writings on their cake.

I blew the candle and the five of us cheered happily.

SURPRISE!

Birthday Cake from Dila and Icha

We had the Tumpeng that my Mom made for dinner and the cakes that my friends brought. The five of us chatted at the dinning room while munching on fried chicken and chocolate cake, and simply had a great time.

Dila gave me a homemade popped-up birthday card, with drawings of me, Kiyota Nobunaga, and Hanagata Toru playing basketball in it. The birthday card is plain genius because I could actually move the basketball around! "We don't have a birthday present for you because we haven't buy one," said Icha, "but, hey, we got you some cake!".

Sally and Angel got me a box filled with knickknacks. "It is called the Box of Metamorphosis, because you will find things inside the box that will transform you," said Angel. I opened the box and I was welcomed with beauty products, accessories, and a beautiful dress. I was in cloud nine when I receive such present! They told me to dress up and be a girl, so I did. The next thing I know, we were in the living room taking endless frames of pictures.

Me and my best buddies!

In summary, my 18th birthday was awesome! I got to spend it with my family and my friends. I ate lots of delicious food and cake. I had a great time keeping in touch with my friends. I was showered with surprises. I got loads of birthday greetings and presents. It was awesome!

Thank you, everybody, my 18th birthday would be dull without you guys in it!

The Day Angel Turned 18

A quick introduction

The last day of October was fun and wonderful! It was the day when a good buddy of mine named Angel turned 18, and we celebrate it with a small feast and a trip to a haunted house. By "we", I meant me, Icha, Sally, Febby, Ratri, Anty, Evan, Chandra, Riva, Adrian, and Raja. There were a dozen of us, and we spread joy in Jakarta Convention Center and Senayan City as we told the world, "Hey, World, Angel is now 18 years old!"

It was in the middle of the day when I arrived at Fx: Lifestyle Center. Me, Icha, Sally, and Angel decided to meet up at this mall before we go to JCC, or Jakarta Convention Center, to go for a ride in a haunted house. I was the first one to arrive at Fx, and I got nothing to do, so I settled down at a restaurant named Kenny Rogers and ordered myself some appetizer. I didn't feel like eating a whole zebra, so I ordered myself a plate of Coleslaw and a refillable Iced Lemon Tea.

A plate of Coleslaw costed me Rp18.000,00, while the Iced Lemon Tea costed me Rp20.000,00. Kenny Rogers' version of Coleslaw is a bowl of cut cabbage, carrots, spring onion, lettuce seeds, and purple cabbage, smothered in mayonnaise. I'm a fan of Coleslaw and I really enjoyed the dish because I think the it tasted refreshing and juicy. But, they put too much mayo in the shredded vegetables, and I don't think spring onion is very suitable to be included in the Coleslaw. The whole meal costed me less than Rp50.000,00, thanks to the pricey 10% tax.

An hour passed, and Icha, Sally, nor Angel hadn't arrived yet. So, I moved to another restaurant, which was Ichiban Sushi, and ordered myself a plate of Tamago Sushi. The sushi palter only consisted of two pieces of Tamago Sushi and it costed me Rp12.500,00. The whole sushi was very sweet and light, and enjoyable, but I tasted better Tamago Sushi before.

Light meals to start the day

Not long after my sushi plater arrived, Icha and Sally arrived at Fx and joined me for a quick lunch. Sally ordered herself a glass of hot Ocha, while Icha had a plate of Salmon Sushi. We finished our lunch and strolled around the mall until Angel arrives. The birthday girl finished her class at 3PM, and since her college is just a 5-minute-drive to Fx, it didn't take long until she arrived at the lifestyle center. Icha, Sally, and I had prepared a Box of Happiness as a birthday present for Angel, which consisted of things that would definitely make her super happy. One of the things inside the Box of Happiness was a handmade comic of mine, and I was very pleased when I know that Angel was very much entertained with my awesome and epic comic.

We hopped in to Angel's car and drove to Jakarta Convention Center. She offered us a selection of petite cakes that she got from her college friends. It was Pepenero's cakes and I was very attracted to the cake with blue candle on it. It was a small Tiramisu with coffee-flavored icing sugar as decoration. I took a bite of that creamy cake and it immediately made me feel happy. Yes, cake can make you happy, people, especially if its' a good and delicious cake! The cake was creamy and soft, and it was deliciously filling my stomach. Icha ate the one that has no candle on it and, judging by her cheer, the cake was also delicious.

A box of petite cakes from Angel's college buddies

It didn't take long for us to get to Jakarta Convention Center. There was, and still is, an exhibition at JCC and the place was crowded with swarms of people. Icha, Sally, Angel and I went to JCC for one thing and one thing only, JAKK Incorporated's Dungeon of Demons. Dungeon of Demons, you see, is a haunted house made my JAKK Inc. I got five free tickets from a friend of mine whom I met at Gudang Rottie, Kak Aruga, and I was very excited, yet also terrified, to experience the horror.

At first, I was going to go inside the haunted house with Icha, followed by Angel and Sally, but Sally and Icha were terrified and decided not to, so, I went in with Angel. The pretend ghosts and ghouls had nice costumes and makeups, which made them look promising. Angel and I were being shouted and shocked by the ghosts inside the Dungeon of Demons. But, it didn't take us five minutes to get out of the terrifying maze, so we decided to go inside one more time.

This time, I paired myself with Icha, while Angel paired herself with Sally. For some reason, during my second visit to the Dungeon of Demons, the ghosts increased from four to seven, and they made me shriek in horror. Icha, on the other hand, covered both of her ears and her arms and accidently sprinted towards a pretend ghost, making me flailed to grab her in terror. But, we survived. "I was scared, yet I was excited because they were playing one of Jigoku Shoujo's soundtrack during our turn, and I saw Kuchisake Onna," said Icha after she got out of the dark labyrinth.

Hellgate passes to the Dungeon of Demons

The four of us had early dinner at a Thailand restaurant named Jittlada, located in Senayan City. Angel and Sally were the ones who picked the dishes for dinner. We ordered lots of food, such as Pineapple Fried Rice, Spring Rolls, Morning Glory, Pad Thai, Pandan Chicken, Thai Tea, Lime Juice, and Jittlada Surprise. Our table was filled with plates and dinning utensils.

Early dinner feast

Left to right: Iced Thai Tea, Lime Juice, Hot Thai Tea

Icha's Jittlada Surprise

It was a very luxurious dinner, I made sure I scooped every single dishes on the table. There were five different dishes on my plate and all of them tasted deliciously savory. The Pineapple Fried Rice were not sticky, they were savory and a bit oily, and you could taste a hint of shrimp oil in it. The pineapple made the dish rich in flavor because they tasted sweet and sour. Raisins and small shrimps could also be found in the fried rice, and they blended well with the other ingredients. Both Pad Thai, or Thailand Noodle, and Stir-fried Morning Glory was very spicy for my taste, my mouth was on fire, but they were very enjoyable and delectable.

Pandan Chicken was one of the dish that I ate. It was a deep-fried chicken covered in Pandan Leaf. I didn't know whether or not the leaf could be eaten, so I took a small bite just to make sure. It turned out, the leaf was very crispy and savory, it went well with a spoonful of Pineapple Fried Rice. Angel and Sally were speechless seeing me munching on leafs like a soon-to-be-cocooned caterpillar. "You're not supposed to eat the lead," said Sally. "But it tasted good," I replied, still munching on the crispy edges.

What I had for dinner

A plate of super spicy Stir-fried Morning Glory with Garlic

Three pieces of Pandan Chicken

The savory and sour Pineapple Fried Rice

A plate of Spring Rolls

After we finished our main courses, the waitress came to our table with a tray of dessert. Two plates of Mango Sticky Rice decorated the table and we dig in. I enjoyed the mango with a spoonful of sticky rice coated in coconut milk, the whole traditional dessert was very sweet and flavorful, but I prefer the fruit alone.

Mango Sticky Rice for dessert

Sally, Icha, and I had been planning on a birthday surprise, along with Febby, Anty, Ratri and the other guys. We were going to popped out with a cake at around 7PM, but our friend named Evan was a bit late and we ended up postponing the surprise. It was 8PM and there was still no sign from Evan, so the four of us left Jittlada and strolled around the mall aimlessly.

I bought some times for the others to prepare the surprise by stopping at every cafe and restaurant on the basement floor. I stopped at some cookie shop, Japanese restaurant, cake shop, ice cream parlor, and didn't bought a single thing. But then I spotted Cold Stones. I got jumpy and excited, and dragged Icha to the ice cream shop and bought myself a cup of ice cream. "Tiramisu Ice Cream with Brownies and Almonds, please," I said to the ice cream man who decorate his face with fake blood because it was Halloween. I paid attention as he mixed the ingredients on an icy table.

Scoop them up!

My ice cream tasted sweet and delightful, it would turn a man's frown into a smile! Yes, I was fully aware by the fact that it was actually fattening gelato instead of ice cream.. but, hey, can anybody say "No!" to a second dessert?

A bowl of Tiramisu Ice Cream, with Brownies and Almonds

After getting myself a cup of ice cream, the four of us proceed to a new bakery that originated from Korea named Tous le Jours. "Come on let's go to that new bakery, I want to buy something for my Mom," I said. True, I was planning on buying something for my Mom, but Febby and the others were ready for the surprise and they told us to meet at the new bakery. So, we rode the escalators thrice and pretended to be looking for something inside the bakery. Sally bought herself a glass of Hot Tea, while I bought a slice of Classic Cheese Cake for my Mom. We sat inside the bakery-restaurant, chatting normally as if something was not going to happen. Then, came Febby, Anty, Ratri, Evan, Chandra, Adrian and Raja with a big Blueberry Cheese Cake, and the next thing I know, we were all singing "Happy Birthday" to Angel.

Sally's Hot Tea

SURPRISE!

"Happy 18th Birthday, Angelia"

The surprise was a success! Angel didn't expect that there would be a wolf pack surrounding her and demanding her to blow lit candles on a cake. There were supposed to be two cakes, one is the big Blueberry Cheesecake and the other is a cupcake from Anty. But, Anty accidently dropped her cupcake box and spoiled the Winnie the Pooh cupcake.

Don't forget to make a wish

Even though we already had dinner, Angel decided to treat us with two buckets of fried chicken, ten glasses of cokes, and a couple of puddings. It was a fun night and I'm thrilled to be able to meet my best buddies again! I ate lots of dishes and beverages and I was certainly full!
