Saturday Picnic Situation

We took the kids out to Kebun Raya Bogor for some fun picnic action last Saturday. By “kids” I meant Nadja and Gavin, my two honorary cousins, and by “we” I meant me and Davie. The four of us headed to the City of Rain approximately at nine in the morning, straight from my house. We gathered an hour earlier to finish up some things that needed to be prepared, which were mostly the food that we were going to bring.

Davie was in charge of cooking some Spaghetti Carbonara, while I got the side dishes duty. I made a few slices of Ovomaltine Banana Sandwich, some Sausage Rolls, a somewhat-healthy nuggets made from deep-fried breaded chicken breast, and I also brought along some peanuts and fruits for side snacks. Gavin had snacks and drinks duty which he shared with Nadja. We took off bringing a lot of food in our car, including a rattan carpet that would fit the four of us.

On our journey to Kebun Raya Bogor, we made a quick pitstop at this coffee shop me and Davie been dying to try, the Anthology Coffee. Located adjacent to a lake somewhere in Sentul, Anthology Coffee serves a wide variety of coffee and tea, and the view was amazing from where we were seated. Although it was rather hot that morning, we decided to occupy one of the outdoor table so that we can bum some smokes in between our sips of hot beverage.

We needed coffee to start our morning.

The blooming tea that me and Nadja had.

I had me a cup of Flat White, along with a pot of Anthology Blooming Tea that I shared with Nadja. “A combination of different tea, herbs, and flower leaves carefully wrapped around each other into one bud and blooms when it steeped,” says the menu. The tea came in a transparent pot with two adorable, and also transparent, tea cups. The sight of the mutation is very beautiful, and the tea itself had a very yellow color, with just slight green. It may look far from appetizing, but the taste is very vibrant and soothing.

My Flat White, on the other hand, was rather strong (which was good because I hadn’t had my share of coffee that morning). The texture was a bit thicker than any other Flat White I have ever tasted and the flavor was dominated more by the bitterness. I had a few sips of Davie and Gavin’s drinks and I came to an understanding that I’m no fan of bitter iced coffee, nor bitter iced latte. I need me some sugar to go with them.

My cup of Flat White.

After refueling ourselves with some nicotines and caffeines, we continued our quest to find a perfect picnic spot for us to enjoy lunch. In about 30 minutes, we arrived at Kebun Raya Bogor, which were very much packed with locals trying to rejuvenate themselves from the hectic days of working. It took us a while to find our designated decent spot to rest our bums. I had a feeling that Davie, who was driving back then, was almost on his last straw.

Favorite child.
Sliding down your girl's DM be like.

We finally arrived at this particular area that was less inhabited compared to some other areas within Kebun Raya Bogor. We parked our car, grabbed our rattan carpet, organized our food on it, and placed ourselves accordingly for lunch. The four of us lunged to Davie’s Spaghetti Carbonara, followed by a set of frantic hands reaching for the nearest side dishes available.

We indulged ourselves in food, in the enjoyable sunny weather of Bogor, in the very chill and relaxing ambience of the park itself, and in some harmful games of cards. Who ever loses had to be punished and, unfortunately, Davie lost the most on our numerous set of games. The loser had to eat anything the winner said, and by “anything” I meant funky food combination. I lost once and I had to eat a piece of Sausage Rolls dipped in Tolak Angin (a herbal vitamin in a form of liquid, very popular with us locals), while Gavin had his share of eating Kiwi without its’ skin peeled off. Davie, on the one hand, had to settle with eating a piece of sausage with a piece of cookies and cream flavored choux cookies.

Our first picnic together!

Night fell, Davie suggested an idea of going to Warpat (Warung Patra Puncak), which is a set of warung somewhere in Puncak where the cool kids like to hang out. I have never been to Warpat in my entire life, unlike the rest of the group, so I was very excited. Davie promised me that when we go to Warpat he would introduce me to his favorite dishes in the whole entire Warpat, the Poffertjes. “The Poffertjes they have at Warpat is the best Poffertjes I’ve ever had,” he said, “you definitely have to try them!”

And, so, there we were, conquering one of the outdoor table at one of the warung at Warpat. The place was super crowded. The transition of people coming in and going away seemed endless. They keep rotating in a count of minutes. We were very lucky to get ourselves some seats because this place will usually get even more packed towards midnight.

Gavin, Nadja, and I got ourselves some Indomie, while Davie had only the Poffertjes for dinner. It got colder as we drove up from Bogor to Puncak and a bowl of Indomie was truly a life safer. I also had me a couple of half-boiled eggs in a cup, dashed with pepper and salt. Them eggs really did me good, my body was instantly warmed-up after a couple of spoonful of it.

My bowl of Indomie Kari Ayam.

Look at them deep-fried ball batter!

A bowl of instant noodle later, came our Poffertjes. We ordered two servings and each plate had five pieces of the humongous Poffertjes. They looked very different from the flat and small Poffertjes I know as they were very plump and big, yet hollow when you cut through them. Topped with powdered sugar and, probably, drizzled with some butter, the Poffertjes exceeded expectations. It was the best Poffertjes I have ever had! There were no funky taste of yeast in it and the butter was overflowing like free wine on a Ladies Night. The outer texture was very crunchy, while the inside was rather flaky and somewhat gooey. The combination of butter, fried batter, and powdered sugar was amazing. I couldn’t help but to devour every pieces I had, despite the fact that they just got out from the frier.

"You jump, I jump," says Jack.

An hour to midnight was when we decided to head back to Jakarta. We were exhausted, I got to sleep for a bit on the back seat, while Nadja and Gavin stuffed themselves with metal songs that I was not familiar with. Unfortunately, the traffic was very dreadful, so it took us around three hours to finally arrived at our beloved capital city.

The Lemmy is God

One day, boyfriend took me to this burger joint that serves some thick-ass juicy burger and alcohol. It was noon, and apparently we don’t really give any damn about when happy hours was going to start, so we settled on the second floor of Lawless Burger Bar and had the ultimate combo of B&B for lunch. And by B&B, I meant burger and booz.

Started off big, we got ourselves the Lemmy Burger each. Now, Lemmy here is the dopest dish that you can find at Lawless Burger Bar. Consisted of two thick meat patties, a generous amount of onion rings, beef brisket, melted cheese, bacon strips, bacon strips, and more bacon strips (unfortunately, they’re beef), then added with a dollop of sauce, along with a slab of pickles, and, finally, garnished with the most breathtaking sunny-side-up. This thing is huge, and tall, and overwhelmingly majestic. It costed me Rp135.000,00 for the burger only, but it was worth it.

The burger was so tall I couldn’t bite into it properly. I had to dissect the whole thing and eat it with a fork and a knife like how the royals eat in the Princess Diaries. But, in this case, you won’t be a sight for sore eyes because this thing is messy as hell!

Davie here is a fan of meat. He cooks meat, he judges meat, and he definitely knows his meat. Boy said that he really love the meat patties as they were very juicy and very tender. “They were not overly cooked,” he said as he pressed down his hand on his burger to let the savory juice overflow ceremoniously. It escapes me wether the staff asked us about how we wanted our meat to be, or not, but one thing for sure that the meat patties were not cooked well done. They were probably somewhere around medium well and medium.

I’m not sure how many sauce there were in the burger, but I remembered tasting a sweet and refreshing Thousand-Islands-like sauce, along with some black pepper sauce, a slab of ketchup on the inner part of the buns, and a hint of barbecue sauce. To my surprise, they sauce did not overpowered the entire filling combination and the flavor was amazingly delicious. I mean, come on, the crispy and thin onion rings combined with three different types of meat, along with some melty cheese, then neutralized with the sour and juicy pickles are just the flavor that everyone needs. It was epic! The most epic burger I’ve ever eaten, yet!

I seriously have to warn you about how massive the Lemmy burger was, tho. A lot was happening on our tray to the point where we had to take a cigarette break from munching (yes, the second floor is smoker friendly indoor seating area). The whole thing was so heavy and room-taking, it took me two hours to finish it all. Well, not all, I only ate one bun as I was too full. The Lemmy was so meaty you might get a heart attack. “Might”, I said “might”!

For the drinks, Davie had a bottle of Bintang Raddler, while I had me a glass of cocktail, the Sambalada, just because it was served in a skull-shaped glass, which I fancy a lot. You see, I’m not a fan of pairing any food with alcohol. For me, the beverage that I take during a meal has to be refreshing, or at least helps make the food go down, and alcohol is definitely not my go-to item. But, that day I decided to step out of my comfort zone. Did I like the combination of pepper-infused tequila with burger? No. Did I like the presentation of the cocktail? Sir, yes, sir!

If you’re someone who love burgers, drink alcohol, smoke at least a pack of cigar a day, and favors the Black Sabbath, Lawless Burger Bar is your safe haven, man. Go for the Lemmy. You won’t regret it!

Air Asia's Dakgangjeong

Chef Hong’s Korean Sweet and Spicy Chicken

All I got to say about this dish is that it doesn’t taste that bad for an airplane food. I mean, come on, y’all ought to know that most of the food being sold in-flight are mostly instant food - most of them just needed to be heated in the oven for a solid 10 minutes and, done, you got yourself a decent meal. But, this new dish that Air Asia launched on the beginning of last month seriously doesn't tasted that bad, as long as you don’t compare it to kkulddak.

New meal, who dis?

The name’s Dakgangjeong. Although it may be a bit expensive, for a spoonful of rice and five pieces of soggy deep-fried breaded chicken bathed in sweet and spicy sauce, this dish is truly a lifesaver when you’re in a long flight, 35,000 feet up in the air, and craving for some good flavorful chicken to munch on. Happened to me today as I was cruising across Semenanjung Malaka.

Seems pretty promising, yes?

To be honest, the rice was dry and the vegetable on top didn’t do any justice to balance the dry texture of the rice, as they were also slightly parched and the least bit flavorful. The sesame seed drizzled on top of the rice didn’t do much either, when it should’ve been the one that add that extra smoky feeling into the flavor wheel.

The sight of the Korean chicken

On the other hand, the Korean Chicken itself was overwhelmingly flavorsome. The sweetness from the sauce would just slap you right away the moment you scoop a spoonful of it into your mouth. The flavor was way too strong for me. The chicken was breaded, right, and since they have been soaked into the sweet and spicy sauce for too long they developed this soggy texture on the outside, while on the inside were just solid and slightly chewy.

It came with this, supposedly, crackling topping of deep-fried batter

Looks crunchy, but not so much.

Fun fact! Our senses degrade the higher we are up in the air, including our sense of taste. This is why airplane food are made super flavorful. Now, this one is overwhelmingly sweet when it was indulged at 35,000 feet. Could you imagine how it would taste like on ground? Goodness.

I'm Ready to Folie in Love

Since I still got my day off today, I decided to head out in search for a cafe that would fulfill my needs for aesthetic and delicious food. I had my eye on Cafe Folie for a while now, a beautiful french cafe located on the first level of Beachwalk Shopping Center. I was immediately sold when I saw the tableware that they use to serve the guests. They are all very pleasant to look at! Finally, I got my chance today and I visit the lovely cafe during brunch time.

Instead of coffee, I settled for their loose leaf tea. The one I had was the French Rose Buds Vanilla, which was served in a beautiful porcelain cup that has drawings of roses on it, and it only took five minutes for my hot beverage to be served after I placed my order. Each serving of this loose leaf tea is equal to four cups. The tea had a very strong vanilla flavor and very fruity. It had a very strong vanilla scent, as well as this hint of sweetness which I’m guessing derives from the rose petals.

I decided to have a cake as well for companion. They have a wide variety of petite cakes and pastry and I really had a hard time choosing because they all looked very pretty, so I gave the decision to my boyfriend. The choice fell to the Blueberry Cheesecake that was purple in color, decorated by crushed peanuts on the side, complete with a dollop of whipped cream and slices of berry on the top. This cake was very beautiful, and it gave me an irrational thought about how it looks like a moe version of Thanos.

Very light and creamy this cake was. The texture was very milky and creamy, while the purple layer had a rather gelatin-like texture. I really love the combination flavor of the crushed peanuts and the cheesecake itself, sweet and savory at the same time. Inside the cake was a generous amount of blueberry compote that tasted nothing but sour. I’m not a big fan of berries on cake, but this blueberry compote managed to balance the overwhelming sweet cream that dominated my tastebud.

The service here exceeded expectation. The waiters and waitress treated me like I was some kind of a royalty, which is nice once in a while. I brought my laptop with me and they were keen enough to offer me a table that has electric sockets nearby. I also added a bit of, “I need a table with less crowd surrounding it,” and they immediately assist me to this particular corner that fulfilled my needs. Two thumbs up!

"What if (we have a coffee shop)?"

Another day, another petite coffee shop. This time, I visited Jikaa, a coffee shop located on the side of Pantai Berawa Street. Do keep in mind that this particular coffee shop is very petite, so be extra careful not to missed it, because I did earlier today.

Jikaa has two dinning areas, the indoor and the outdoor. I usually go for the outdoor, but since the hangout spot is located exactly adjacent to the busy street of Seminyak, this morning I decide to have my quality time indoor. And, since the place is very compact, it only took me a few steps to go outside to bum a smoke.

This place has a very cozy and chill vibe going on. Most of the music they played in here are quite jazzy and sometimes blues, which is nice if you’re in the mood of having a very laidback morning.

No filter. Just sun rays!

As always, the first thing I ordered was a cup of Flat White. I didn’t pay enough attention to the menu as it says that the Flat White comes in two sizes. I accidentally didn’t order the big cup, resulting, in the beginning, in a lack of caffeine. But, as time goes by, I came to a realization that the small cup was enough to fuel my energy, as well as keeping my tummy intact since it was still empty. The Flat White was just a wee bit watery, but the creamy milk combined with the coffee, that was dominated by bitterness just how I like it, tasted fine.

I continued my morning writing on my laptop whilst indulging in one of its’ famous smoothie bowl, the Chia This Way. It was pink in color, consisted of a dragon fruit and banana base, then topped with Jikaa’s homemade chia seed pudding (that tasted superb, oh my Lord!), sliced pineapples, watermelon, and a handful of chocolate peanut butter granola. Some smoothie bowls can have a very overwhelming flavor wheel, but not this one. The Chia This Way was very enjoyable and plain delectable. The tropical fruits used as the toppings in this smoothie bowl gave a nice flavor change. I mean, strawberries are soo last year. It’s time to give watermelon a chance!

I went for a potty break a few times since I drink a lot here. After the coffee, came the Hot Honey Ginger Tea. The hot and spicy beverage managed to soothe the pain that was going on in my tummy well. “Fresh ginger tea with honey, just to keep you warm,” as the slogan said. And it did!

My afternoon that was accompanied by the Hot Honey Ginger Tea and SBA Sandwich

Noon came and I was famished. I really wasn’t in the mood to have carbs, but they don’t have anything on the menu that doesn’t come with carbs, and I was too lazy to ask for a substitute for the bread. So, I settled with its’ Sunny Bacon Avocado Sandwich, with only one toast on the bottom, added with an extra scrambled egg. Protein protein protein!

I think I’m starting to become fond of sourdough. I mean, they all tasted great! Very thick and crunchy crust, then the middle part was chewy, yet not soft. This one was topped with a dollop of smashed avocado, then garnished with two layers of eggs, a sunny-side-up and a scrambled, and a rather thick and crispy bacon. Oh, Lord. The flavor combination of these ingredients were just majestic. Nothing can go wrong!

Get yourself some extras like I did. Go for the bacon and eggs!

I have spent six hours at this place and, so far, I am very much comfortable here. There were not a lot of people here, which is good for me because I need my peace and quiet, and the staff are very friendly. Plus points for treating the locals as polite and as friendly as the foreigners!

If only this place was just a meter away from where I lived, I would definitely come here everyday.

Kue Kering Lebaran, Alhamdulillah!

“Delicious. Special for you.” begitulah slogannya.

Ku-Ker Lecker Pastry

Kue kering Lebaran favorit gue!

My Go-tos at Crumb & Coaster

Okay, so, Crumb and Coaster has officially become my family’s go to place whenever we feel like fulfilling our needs for good food and aesthetic visuals. For the past month, we’ve been coming back and forth for, like, two or three times already and we always leave with satisfaction. Dad and I finally took Mom to the restaurant for lunch one day, since Dad and I are the ones who usually roam around the streets of Kuta to find new places to eat, and she loved it, thank God!

These were the food we ate a few days apart,

Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich

The tittle says it all. But, what it doesn’t say is that the crew here at Crumb and Coaster are using a chewy and crunchy sour dough instead of a usual bread loaf and that in between those layer of breaded chicken breast and sour dough is a generous pile of colorful and juicy coleslaw. It also came with some House Fries on the side and a portion of ketchup, along with a slice of lime, to go with. This dish truly has a breathtaking visual!

I can assume that the chef are using high quality chicken breast judging from its’ presentation and flavor. The chicken breast were very thick and it was breaded nicely and well fried. I have to admit, it tasted a bit dry, especially combined with the sour dough toast, but the flavor was smacking I ended up finishing everything that was on my plate even though I promised myself not to eat carbs. There wasn’t much seasoning on the chicken and the sour dough, the flavor was very subtle, so adding some ketchup into your sandwich can be a good alternative. Don’t forget to ask for chilly flakes! Add some into your ketchup. It will elevate the whole flavor wheel.

The coleslaw really helped by adding those wanted juice along the way of munching. There amount of mayonnaise inside the coleslaw was proper for my taste - just a few amount of it because I don’t like my food be all saucy from the mayo - but for those of you mayo lovers out there, if you don’t think there’s enough mayo in your coleslaw, you can definitely ask for more to the waiters and waitresses.

On the one hand, the House Fries was bomb - thinly cut, fried to perfection (golden brown fries are my jam!), crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, topped with some fresh parsley, dashed with a pinch of salt and pepper, and the portion served as a side dish was just on point! If you’re a fan of having your french fries with ketchup, like me, I say, “Go for it!”.

BBQ “Naughty” Pull Pork Burger

This was Dad’s dish. The visual of this naughty burger is as pleasing as my sandwich, but if I have to chose between the two, I would probably go for the burger.

Constructed out of two amazingly solid, yet chewy, buns with sesame seeds on top, Crumb and Coaster’s signature barbecued pulled pork, homemade coleslaw like the ones I have in my sandwich, and a generous drizzle of melted cheese. It also comes with some House Fries on the sides and a generous serving of ketchup.

I tried a bite of the barbecued pull pork and, boy, it was very delicious! The meat was shredded and cooked well, hence the tender and juicy texture, with barbecue sauce making it very flavorful and somewhat caramelized. For me, the amount of barbecue sauce is very overwhelming to the point of sickening when I ate too much of it. But, other than that, this dish right here is a must try! It’s my Dad’s go to meal whenever we come to Crumb and Coaster because he can’t get enough of it.

You better prepare yourself before you devour this baby. You ought to empty your stomach and get ready to be messy!

Wagyu Classic Beef Burger

Mom’s choice for lunch was the Wagyu Classic Beef Burger, with the meat cooked at medium well-done. Although the presentation of this burger might be a runner-up compared to the naughty burger that my Dad had, it sure has its’ own persona and charisma that makes one curious regarding how it’s going to taste (and by “one” I meant me).

A classic burger usually consists of meat patty, lettuce, onion, tomato, and a dollop of sauce in between the meat. Crumb and Coaster might add a little twist to the term “classic” by adding another element that sure bring the whole being of the burger to another level, which is a sunny-side-up. Correction. A sunny-side-up with a runny yolk! Gosh, I might faint from all the food porn imagination I have in my head. If you squash the sunny-side-up with the top part of the bun, I can guarantee you a very satisfying frame of runny egg yolk streaming down your wagyu and onion to the very bottom of the burger tire that would definitely gain hearts from your Instagram follower. I mean, who doesn’t like a good food porn, right?

My Mom ordered her meat patty to be medium well-done and it was served, thankfully, like her expectation. The outer part of the meat was grayish brown with a bit of charcoal mark imprinted here and there and the inside was only the slightest bit pink in the middle, just like how medium well-done are supposed to  be like. The meat patty was very juicy it dripped until the bottom bun along with the egg yolk!

Falafel Salad Bowl

Ah, my go to meal during my diet days. Consisted of sliced zucchini and a whole other bunch of greens, this salad is the proper go to dish that usually get when I feel like eating fancy without feeling guilty afterwards. Other than just greens, it also had some sliced horse radish and bell pepper in it, as well as four pieces of falafels which I love so much!

Them falafels may be the best falafels I had, so far! They were fried to perfection, golden brown and very crispy, and the texture was not just mushy, yet it had this whole bits of pea in it. Love it! And, although the flavor was very nutty and savory, it helped a lot in digesting the whole other bland leafs as I didn’t use any of the white sauce served because I was afraid that I would gain some extra fat on my bums if I did.

Cold Beverages

I always go for the smoothie. My favorite, so far, is the Farm Berry Smoothie because it tasted really refreshing, very creamy from the yogurt, and it came with three pieces of blueberry on top. My second favorite is the Inner Strength Smoothie because banana can never go wrong with a handful of peanut butter.

Now you know some of the things that I love to indulge in at Crumb and Coaster. It’s time for you to find yours!
